Most of the limited money spent on refugees in Hong Kong is for basic daily necessities: food, clothing, shelter. Whilst social welfare is essential to meeting short-term survival needs, there is only one long-term solution available to refugees in Hong Kong… asylum. A refugee who successfully receives asylum can be resettled to another safe country and begin a new life. Without asylum, refugees continue to hang in heartbreaking, indefinite limbo in Hong Kong. Asylum is their only chance at a new life.

For refugees in Hong Kong, HKRAC can literally make the difference between life and death. Only 10% of refugee claims filed without legal support are granted asylum by UNHCR, while 50% of refugee claims filed with legal support are provided with asylum and resettlement to a safe country! We’re ecstatic about HKRAC’s impact, however, HKRAC’s small operating budget does not even come close to meeting current refugee needs in Hong Kong. HKRAC is currently meeting the needs of less than 15% of the asylum claims filed at UNHCR, so over 85% of refugees still endure the asylum process without the critical legal help they need.

HKRAC has a shortfall of HK$3,000,000 in its funding for 2010. In these difficult economic times, HKRAC is faced with numerous challenges in raising adequate funds to secure continued legal services for refugees. 

Many refugees and asylum-seekers are separated from their families and can only hope that one day they will be granted refugee status, resettled to a safe country, and be reunited with their loved ones.
